Hello, my name is Tonya Handy and I am the full-time Counselor at Lewis County Central
Elementary. This year begins my fourteenth year at Central. My children and I live Fleming
County. I grew up in Mason and Fleming Counties. I graduated from Fleming County High
School in 1987.
I have three children that keep me busy-ages 20, 16, and 8 years old. My son attends
school at L.C.H.S. and my oldest daughter attends Morehead State University. My youngest
daughter attends third grade at Central.
I received my Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education and Learning and
Behavior Disorders from Morehead State University in 1991. I received two Master Degrees
from Morehead State as well, one in Elementary Education in 1997 and the other in Guidance
and Counseling in 2002. In addition, I have a Rank I in Elementary Education, which I also
received in 2002.
Previous to being a counselor, I taught Special Education at Tollesboro Elementary School
and Rowan County Middle School. I was a Special Education teacher for a total of 9.5 years.
I enjoyed teaching children with special needs, but I enjoy even more being a School
Counselor. My goal as Counselor at Central Elementary is to address the social/emotional
and educational needs of our students by providing individual counseling, group counseling,
and classroom guidance.
